How to Style Shelves Like a Designer - Laura Gransberry
Styling shelves is one of those design details that can instantly elevate a room from ordinary to
curated and cohesive. Whether you’re working with open kitchen shelving, a built-in bookcase,
or a simple wall-mounted unit, well-styled shelves tell a story about who you are while
enhancing the overall aesthetic of your space. The key is in creating balance, layering
thoughtfully, and mixing materials for depth and interest. Here’s how to do it like a designer:
Start with a Clean Slate
Before you begin styling, clear everything off your shelves. This blank canvas allows you to see
the space as a whole and plan your arrangement with intention. Consider the height, depth, and
color of the shelves themselves: these details will influence your styling choices. For example,
light wood or white shelves create an airy, minimalist look, while dark or reclaimed wood adds
warmth and sophistication.
Begin with a Focal Point
Every shelf or section should have a visual anchor. This could be a large vase, framed artwork,
or an interesting sculpture. A focal point grounds the arrangement and prevents the eye from
wandering aimlessly. For built-ins, try leaning a piece of art or a framed photo against the back
wall for a relaxed, layered look.
Use the Rule of Thirds
Designers often rely on the “rule of thirds” when styling: grouping items in threes for a natural,
balanced look. Vary the heights and shapes within each grouping to keep the composition
dynamic. For example, pair a tall plant with a medium-sized stack of books and a smaller
decorative object. Odd numbers are visually pleasing and make the arrangement feel more
organic than overly symmetrical.
Mix Textures and Materials
A well-styled shelf includes a thoughtful mix of materials. Glass, wood, metal, ceramic, and
natural elements like plants or woven baskets are best, adding depth and interest. Combine
glossy ceramics with matte pottery, or smooth books with rougher textures like stone or rattan.
The contrast creates a visually engaging rhythm across your shelves.
Layer for Depth
Avoid lining up items in a single row. Instead, layer pieces by placing some items slightly in front
of others. Books can act as risers for smaller decorative pieces, while artwork or mirrors leaned
at the back add dimension. The layering technique makes shelves feel curated and lived-in
rather than staged.
Add Books Thoughtfully
Books are essential for shelf styling, but they don’t all have to stand upright. Try stacking some
horizontally and others vertically. Remove dust jackets for a cleaner look, or turn a few books
backward for a softer, neutral effect. Mix in decorative bookends or small objects on top of
stacks to break up monotony.
Incorporate Greenery
Plants breathe life into any shelf display. Choose small succulents, trailing vines, or preserved
greenery that doesn’t require constant care. Their organic shapes soften hard lines and add a
fresh, natural element to the composition.
Step Back and Edit
Edit ruthlessly! Once you’ve placed your items, step back and assess. Does your arrangement
feel balanced? Are your colors cohesive? Sometimes removing one or two pieces makes the
entire display feel more intentional. Remember that negative space is just as important as the
objects themselves.
Final Thoughts:
Styling shelves is part art, part restraint. When done right, they reflect your personality while
maintaining harmony within the room. Curate rather than clutter, choose meaningful pieces, play
with proportion, and let every shelf tell a story. With these designer tips, your shelves will look
effortlessly elegant and perfectly styled.
